Roy G Biv

Leah turned five, and Jack put his foot down. He said, essentially, that come hell or high water, this year we’re going to finally give this child the birthday party she’s never had.

He had a point. We have never properly celebrated poor Leah’s birthday. Last year it fell in the middle of a major move. The year before that, another move, and this disaster. Before that there were other various excuses, such as traveling, illness, and the fact that as the middle child, we just don’t love her as much as the others.

I agreed, and set to work. After consulting with the birthday girl, we settled on the theme “Rainbow Party,” which Jack referred to as her “Roy G Biv Party.” It was an appropriate choice. Anyone who has met our Leah can attest that her personality refracts every color under the sun. I also loved the theme because rainbow parties have been making rampant appearances on craft blogs lately, and I was spared from having to come up with a single original idea.

Here are a few memories from the day. Most of the pictures were taken before our 10 little guests arrived and the house unraveled into an orchestrated chaos from which it took me a full two days to recover. And a full three weeks before getting around to uploading the pictures. Here’s hoping I captured enough to provide counterargument when Leah grows up, notices the 4-year void, and wonders if we loved her in the early years.

We do love you Leah. In fact - don’t tell the others - but you are our favorite.

  1. I love it all! And you are doing MUCh better than we are. Our middle child is turing 8 and has never had a birthday party with friends. It is going to have to be a good one this year!

  5. Maybe your middle child and my middle child can hook up and attend therapy later on in life. I'll split the bill with you.

    Fun party!!!

  10. 10 girls!?! You had 10 5 year-old girls to invite? I am so jealous.

Thankfully the local 6 year-old girl recently returned from India, so Marielle won't be the only girl at her party next month.

  11. That picture of her by the table with all the rainbow hair bows is TOO MUCH!! She is such a doll but I can't believe she's five already. Happy Birthday to Leah! And way to redeem yourself with the legit party theme! Though, I must say, "Leah Gets the Shaft" will always be my personal favorite.

  12. She is THE cutest 5 year old on the planet. And that's a fact. Unoriginal or not, those Roy G Biv jello cups, cloud wands, and cupcakes are beautiful and look like they took quite a bit of effort. Which is perfect because 5 is the first birthday anybody remembers anyway. Miss you all tons!

  13. At first I thought you were blogging about a track from one of my favorite albums by They Might Be Giants - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gf33ueRXMzQ . But no, this is better. And that's saying something. That is a very impressive party, and worthy of the awesomeness that is Leah.
Just one question - where's the photo of preggo Katie? The people demand photos.

  15. You are my hero. Every single one of our kids' birthday parties looks like the "we're in the process of moving" party from 2 years ago, except we haven't moved in a decade. This party is adorable...almost as adorable as your favorite child! ;)

  16. You have some mad skills my friend! Such a festive and fun party! My favorite was the rainbow jello and my girls thought the rainbow cloud/wand were especially magical.

I think you should go into the business. You won over our girls and me!

  17. Can I have a cupcake? Those looked great! You can tell Leah was blessed beyond tears with that party. You can see it in her face.

  18. I'm having major Erblet withdrawals... I miss you guys so much and I hate not knowing when we will see you next... Leah looks SOOOO stinking cute and happy... And don't worry, I was the forgotten middle child in our family and I turned out fine! Love you to pieces! I also want to see the cute preggo belly before it's too late and baby boy is here because he'll be here before we know it!
